Has anyone on the list had experience teaching Grade 7 or 8 using Mosaic
type lessons? I have just finished reading Cris Tovani's book "I Read
it...." but I am wondering if the strategies in her book would apply to
advanced readers?

Thanks in advance!

Dave,

I teach 6th grade and I can tell you...IT WORKS! :-) I don't see why it
won't work with 7th and 8th grade. I enjoyed Cris Tovani's book as well. I
recommend picking up Strategies That Work and Nonfiction Matters. What do
you teach?

Karla....thanks for your input. Right now I am teaching 3/4 and moving to
7/8 next year. I have used Mosiac and Reading with Meaning strategies for 2
years and they were terrific. I have Strategies that Work and Nonfiction
Matters which will help. I really just wanted to know some of the
experiences that other may have had with this age group. Especially the
students attitude towards it.

Thanks again

Laura - thank you so much for making these downloads (and so many more!)
available in PDF format. Too many times I read everyone raving about

appreciate your site so much! Debbie in Duluth

Read Kylene Beers book "When Kids Can't Read". It is for grades 6-12. It
is great. Provides good information on how to help those students who can
say the words, but have trouble really understanding what they have read.

I've used the strategies from I Read it with International Baccalaureate
students with great success. I guess if we believe that good readers use
the reading strategies than advanced readers are probably included as
well.

A colleague and I tried MOT with 7th and 8th graders this year. It's been a
wonderful experience. The students really got engaged with reading. We had
some wonderful discussions and very motivated readers. Parents felt that
their student were more involved with reading than ever before. With MOT I
taught reading using the workshop model. The students liked the
flexiblity and the non structured format. I urge anyone who teaches middle
school to get on board with MOT. You will find it challenging and
fulfilling.

Oh my heavens, yes. I use these strategies with pre-service teachers
at a local college and I am using these strategies in a Teacher as
Reader class this summer for Miami University of Ohio. I love her
book and her video tapes compliment her book nicely.

I was asked by a teacher who is moving from 3rd to 7th/8th math and
reading what one book she should read for the summer to help her with
middle school reading and I suggested the Tovani book.

Donna Baker stated in her email that she had given workshops to high
school teachers. Donna, I am wondering what you covered exactly. Did you
give workshops to teachers in all of the content areas?

I teach reading in Elkhart, Indiana for grades 7-8. Right now, I am
part of a reading task force that is encouraing the use of reading
strategies K-12 (using the same terms throughout a student's
schooling-finally!)
We will have numerous inservices on this topic in the next few years.

I would appreciate knowing names of speakers in my general geographical
area who have trained other teachers in comprehension approaches. Thank
you. My home email is: gbsuderman@juno.com

Happy end-of-the-school-year to all of you..

The teachers who attended were history, math, special education. I am not
sure of the others. I have only covered two strategies so far (they wanted
to go slow, and try the strategies before the next workshop) - Making
Connections and Asking Questions. Each time we met they shared how they
used the strategies in their subject area.

Dear Mary- I'm glad to hear of your positive experience with MOT teaching.
Maybe you can share some of your expertiece. I am a middle school (6,7,8)
resource teacher. I have been trying to do independent reading with my
groups. I
have about 8 kids per 45 minute period. I found I never had enough time to
conference with many kids and really wasn't sure if they were actually
learning
anything. I didn't have them fill out anything after finishing a book but
during i had them listing new vocabulary words. We'd discuss the words but
that
was about all. I'd like to know how you handled it in your class. Thanks
so
much, Joanis
