I just finished Debbie Miller's new book and loved it. Although I teach
third grade, I found much of it useful. Honestly, the best part for me
was the affirmation that we're doing this right. I'm excited about some
of her suggestions and will work a few in this year, but I'm already
planning how to start next fall with a fresh look at Schema.

Hi Elise! I'm not sure if you found a book yet for your 4th grader butI
think that in order for him tomake true text to self connections, you need
to know him first personally and go from there. If you know his likes,
hobbies, passions, etc, then you could then ask around for suggestions
related to those specific topics of interest. Good luck! Alisa

Subject: Re: [mosaic] Problem Solving/Writing?

I like the problem solving strategies. Any ideas on how to shape the comprehension strategies to help children with their writing? The reason I am asking is I am presenting on Anchors in Literature in a few weeks. The presentation is to consist of examples in literature that teachers can use to model strategies used in narrative writing such as, forecasting, flashback, effective leads and conclusions, creating suspense, figurative speech etc. Someone suggested I just use Charlotte's Web to model all the strategies, but I want to make my presentation a little more interesting!: )
I have Craft Lessons and have ordered Wondrous Words.
Is there a way to apply the comprehension strategies to improve the students' writing?

Nancy

Subject: [mosaic] Looking for a MOT presenter

Hello,

My name is Jama. I have been a lurker for some time. I intended to
introduce myself, but you all are so impressive, and I didn't know what I
had to offer. I have read Mosaic of Thought and Strategies That Work two or
three times each, and I am on my second reading of Debbie Miller's new book
Reading With Meaning. They are all most excellent books! MOT has
revolutionized the way I read and understand, and is revolutionizing the way
I teach first graders to read, too. Thank you, Ellin and friends.

I am on the Reading Curriculum committee at my school, a private Christian
school in East Tennessee. I have recommended the MOT strategies to my
committee and to my principal. I am so excited! They are open to
implementing a study with a goal of making these strategies part of our
philosophy of education. Today my principal asked me if I knew of anyone
who would be qualified to come to our school to do an in-service training on
MOT for the whole faculty. So, I am asking you. Is there anyone out there
who can do this? I don't even know how much presenters charge for such a
service, or if we could afford a presenter. Please, help me out with this
information. (Ginger, Laura, educate me on this.)

I want to thank all of you very much for your influence on my life. I enjoy
this mailring!

Jama

Hi. You can contact the Denver coalition that Ellin Keene and Stephanie
Harvey work out of. They have many qualified presenters -

Good luck.

Greetings everyone;
I just wanted to respond to Jama's query and to let the rest of you know, as
Laura indicated, that the PEBC (Public Education & Business Coalition) in
Denver runs four annual workshops called National Study Seminars. These are
superb workshops in which participants from all over the country get to
observe in classrooms in which comprehension strategies work has been
ongoing for many years including Patrick Allen and Debbie Miller's
classrooms among others that are just superb! The workshops are four days
and include an enormous amount of information about strategy implementation,
but perhaps more importantly, about providing leadership in your school or
district about strategy instruction. You can contact Judy Hendricks at
jhendricks@pebc.org or at 303.861.8661 for information about these
workshops. As I no longer work for the PEBC, I can put in an unabashed plug
for these seminars -- run, don't walk, they're that good!!!

best to you all,
ellin keene

Subject: [mosaic] booklist
From: "David Fife" <d.fife@tvdsb.on.ca>

First off , I would like to thank you for creating your website. When I
first read Mosaic of Thought and Strategies that Work I thought
....Wow...this is really great stuff. Then I began to wonder about the
books that I could use to help my students improve their comprehension.
This was the only thing lacking in these two books. Then I came across
your website. Thank goodness. As a classroom teacher, I really want the
resources that can be used with any new or revamped program. So you were
what I was looking for.

Secondly. I would like to help you out with your list of books in each
comprehension strategy. The mother of a student in my class is the head
Children's Librarian in my city. I have spoken to her and she is going to
help me (and you out) . She is a wealth of information, who goes that
extra mile (or kilometer here in Canada) for our school. Over the summer
we are going to search the library, select and rate as many books as we
can for each comprehension strategy. So if you would like me to I would
be more than happy to send you our list when we have completed our work.
Just let me know!

Thanks again for your work.
