The listserve has just been VERY QUIET lately, Jama! You didn't miss
anything! Perhaps we could all share what we've been working on so far this
year? Or whatever else comes to mind???!!!!!
I know I would LOVE to have some active talk. You KNOW I CRAVE that and
never get my fill.
I'll be around over winter break, so let the talk begin!!!!!!!!!

Hi All! Happy Holidays! Maybe to get the conversation started again, I'll
share what I've been doing in recent weeks. I focused on teaching two
strategies this fall, schema and sensory imaging. My class and I have been
doing a literature study of Hatchet over the last couple of weeks, a story I
think is excellent for both strategies. At this point I am not directly
teaching the strategies but the students write letters to me and draw
pictures in their literature logs addressing their use of both of these
strategies as they read the book. We also do a lot of partner, small group,
and whole class discussion. Today, the students worked with a partner and
did a short "skit" of a part of the story and performed it in small
groups.
A lot of the students did the scene where the pilot has a heart attack and
dies but numerouse chose other scenes as well. They loved doing this and
one
group requested to perform for the whole class tomorrow. I've been very
pleased with their progress and have witnessed a real growth in
comprehension
in my students.

Some of you have mentioned books for sensory images. I am trying to
find one that includes many different senses. I would be reading it
to a staff to demonstrate sensory imaging. I was thinking maybe
Gary Paulsen. Does anyone have any specific suggestions?
I appreciate your updates so much!

There are a couple of passages in Touching Spirit Bear that are excellent
for
sensory images. If you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a boy
who
gets in a lot of trouble and is finally sent to spend a year alone in the
Alaskan wilderness. After just a couple of days, he attempts to attack a
bear and is mauled nearly to death. He is left for dead for nearly two days
until the man who checks on him finds him. The descriptions of how he
survives and how he feels those two days are phenomenal, and my 8th graders
loved the book.

How about planting a Japanese peace garden? This is something I plan to do
myself with my own students. These gardens are spiritually- based, and they
are made up of rocks, sand, and some shrubs. There is a beautiful novel,
The Samurai's Garden, which talks about these gardens in the context of a
love story between a man and a woman, who is a leper and has kept such a
garden for years. Anyway, I thought the possibility for research was great,
and the garden itself is beautiful and uplifting. IF anyone else is
thinking of trying this, let me know. Our middle school has a perfectly
sized unplanted oval of grass that would be very suitable for this.

If you are thinking about using the arts, why not go to
readinglady.com? Laura has a great collection of Readers Theater
scripts for lots of books that kids really love. I did Click, Clack,
Moo, Cows That Type this past summer with first graders, (around primer
level or a little better). They were struggling readers in an
Intervention Program for only 6 weeks.
First, I read Click, Clack, Moo...as a read aloud. Then we talked about
it. Next, I presented them with the scripts, and we took turns reading
parts. Then, the kids were comfortable enough with the scripts to
choose parts. They highlighted their parts. After that I brought in
hand puppets that I checked out of our local library, which has an
extensive collection of puppets.
We practiced with the puppets, and for some of them, it was a bit
difficult to read & make a puppet move. So, I had to model working the
puppet & reading at the same time.
I could not believe how much they improved in fluency & expression.
They were like little actors & actresses. With the puppets in hand,
some of the shy ones really blossomed.
Congratulations on your grant. Can you tell us your source for the
grant?

Some teachers at my school are planning after school tutoring based
on putting on plays. They figure just about everything academic can
be used -- one joked, "Even if we have to make them figure out how to
measure the area of the rug!"
It's an exciting idea. I already gave them the name of my first
grader who can read and do his math, but is consistently marching to
some drummer I can only imagine -- I think some day this child will
be directing movies, but at this point in time I'd give anything to
have him focus on just one thing.

You may want to check out the Spaghetti Book Club. The Spaghetti Book
Club is a literacy program that integrates reading, writing, art and
technology by teaching students how to write and illustrate book
reviews that are then published on the web. The Spaghetti Book Club
encourages students to think critically about the books they are
reading and gives them the opportunity to publish their thoughts and
opinions for a world-wide audience. As I'm sure you can imagine, it
is quite a thrill for students see their work on the web!

Jill,
The e-mail address for Reach Foundation of Rockland is
reachfoundation@aol.com <mailto:reachfoundation@aol.com>
It is a group set up to enhance the educational experience of the students
in Ramapo Central School District in Rockland County NY. I don't know if
they have a parent organization or not. If you e-mail, I am sure that
someone will get back with you. I hope that there is a national partner.
Have a good Holiday Season!

I have been a part of this listserve for only a short time- a mentor
recommended I join after I moved to a new school where
only a few have even heard of MOT. Thanks for your support- just reading
the messages has helped keep me on track!
I have been using plays with my second graders. I love to see evidence
of their visualization as they dramatize the
different parts. I think of Debbie Miller's book and the way her children
spontaneously dramatized poetry. I have always
noticed certain children who "act out" books as I read them aloud.
They
make faces, cross their arms- literally become the
characters! I think it is exciting that dramatization is evidence of
understanding! What fun!
